It’s hard to walk into a cafe today without seeing at least a few Gen Z students sitting with their laptops open, drinks on the table, and Airpods in. For some, it may seem excessive: Why spend money on coffee or matcha when homework could easily be done at home? But for Gen Z, cafes have become more than just a place to grab a drink; they have turned into a place to study, hang out, relax, and exist in a more inspiring environment.
Many younger individuals prefer places that feel both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Lighting, cozy seating, music playing in the background, and a nice latte is all part of an experience. A well-designed space can make studying feel less like a chore and more like something for which to be excited.
A lot of young people don’t have the perfect environment at home to focus on their studies. Homes can be loud, distracting, or, at times, mentally draining. Going to a cafe offers a change of scenery and a place that feels calm without being completely silent. There’s something motivating about being around other people who are also working, talking, or doing their own thing. “I like working at cafes because it sort of holds me accountable and keeps me working. If I were to work at home, I’d end up procrastinating or getting distracted, but at a cafe everyone else is working— so I’m motivated to do the same,” senior Anna Zetilyan said.
A lot of public spaces, like libraries, that older generations used to spend time in don’t have the same appeal anymore, and many other public places today feel like you either have to buy something or leave quickly. Cafes strike a balance where they still feel welcoming in a way that many other spaces don’t. Nobody seems to question the people who spend long hours sitting and studying. For many, the six-dollar coffee is a fair compromise for being able to lock in and get some work done.
Social media also plays a role in this shift. Platforms like Tiktok and Instagram are always filled with cafe-based content, like an influencer having a study session at a local spot. At the end of the day, cafes aren’t just a trend for Gen Z. They provide a space that feels both productive and personal, something hard to find in other places. In a world full of distractions, sometimes all it takes is a cup of coffee, a laptop, and the quiet buzz of a cafe to finally get work done.
