In a world where almost everyone has a smartphone, it might seem strange that digital cameras are becoming popular again. For years, phones had replaced “digicams” for most. But in recent years, more students are choosing to use digital cameras, not because they’re newer, but because they offer something different.
Nostalgia plays a big role in this change. Many digital cameras give a slightly grainy or “vintage” look that can remind people of older pictures. This style has become especially popular on social media. In a way, it can make people feel like they’re living in the early 2000s since digital cameras were popular around those years.
As time passed, digital cameras lost popularity, until their recent comeback. “Digital cameras make pictures feel like memories instead of just posts. It reminds me of old family photos, like from the early 2000s. For me, it makes everything feel more sentimental, like I’m in a different time,” freshman Isabella Hovespian said.
Digital cameras can be used for various purposes, from creating pictures of the moment to using the camera’s filters, to taking beautiful portraits. It’s an alternative to picture-taking with an iPhone or Android.
Another reason for this comeback is how digital cameras make photos feel more candid. Phone pictures are often edited, filtered, and carefully chosen before being posted. With digital cameras, the photos are more natural. “For me, pictures taken on digital cameras are more meaningful than on phones. In some way, it feels more genuine and special. I also really like how the quality and lenses make the picture so much more aesthetic than a regular phone camera,” freshman Chloe Ghadimi said. The quality of the picture and the way it is taken on a device besides one’s phone can make it more memorable.

Some of the high demand cameras include Canon PowerShot, Fujifilm Instax, and the Sony Alpha. One of the most favored cameras for taking self-portraits or selfies is the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III. Many influencers or content creators use this camera, making it the “TikTok famous” digital camera. Features for this camera include excellent low-light performance, fast autofocus, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity.
Overall, the return of digital cameras shows that trends can come back in unexpected ways. Even though phones are more advanced, digital cameras offer a meaningful way to capture memories. In 2026, it’s clear that sometimes going back to older technology can actually feel new again.
