Girls in colorful party dresses and guys dressed in their dressy suits, excited students anticipate an event that many consider to be the highlight of the year.
Students started to arrive at school as early as 6:00pm, despite the event starting at 6:30pm. Crowds of Clark students as well as other GUSD high school students (520 to be exact) filled into the night’s dance floor on the Clark campus, ready to start dancing and having a fun time.
Students and staff wore floral and pastel clothes to match this year’s theme of Enchanted Garden. While most people wore floral patterns, pastels or blacks, a group of seniors went above and beyond in their gnome costumes, going all out on this year’s theme. “Honestly, I was just there [at Homecoming] to take life a little easy, dress up to entertain me and my friends,” senior Dalten Murillo said. Seeing the seniors take a fun approach on the theme brought a smile and giggle on so many faces. “It’s a time where people were able to feel more connected. People that I don’t even know came up to us to compliment our outfits,” senior Elia Kappa said.
Hurriedly, friends eager to get photos for their Instagram stories took pictures before it got dark. Luckily for them, there were many great photo opportunities, from the professional photo booth to the walls decorated in colorful lights and turf as well as areas filled with balloon arches and flowers.
The Homecoming dinners were bought from Mendocino Farms, a smaller restaurant chain known for their ornate southern style sandwiches and salads that are made with only non-modified ingredients. The meals handed out to students included a sandwich, two cookies, a bag of chips, and water. A filling but not heavy meal for the hours of excitement that they had ahead of them.
People danced to the music played by DJ Greg for hours until their feet hurt and straightened hair curled back up. There was dancing, singing, and jumping, to music of all different languages (English, Armenian, Spanish, Arabic) until the very last minute (9:30) on the dance floor. People were especially hyped for the song Fein by Travis Scott, which was played a total of four times and was even the event’s closing song! It was an unforgettable night filled with warm smiles, as people danced in circles with anyone in a close enough radius.
Homecoming is an event that the Associated Student Body works tirelessly to plan. “Homecoming was definitely stressful to plan. It took a lot of effort, and we weren’t even fully able to finish everything we wanted because we ran out of time. Despite that, it was a great way for ASB to work on their team building skills,” ASB Director of Activities Lia Khodaverdi said when asked about the planning of this year’s Homecoming.
Days of hard work went into the planning of this event to give the community a few hours of fun with friends after school. Homecoming this year was a truly great event, enjoyed by students, staff, and faculty alike. Kicking off this year with a Homecoming dance started off the school year with a bang, making students excited for whatever ASB has planned next!
