For years, seniors have embraced the fun tradition of bringing backpacks with cartoon characters to school. High schoolers online say this tradition started as early as the 2000s. Recently, however, there has been a new addition to this trend, with many senior girls choosing Longchamp purses as their new “senior backpacks.”
Many seniors have made the switch because these purses are simple, durable, and stylish. They’re typically made of nylon, have leather handles, and foldable flaps. They usually come in neutral colors like beige, brown, navy, and black.
Some students say the shift toward Longchamp bags shows how trends change over time. While the children’s backpacks used to be an iconic marker of senior year, Longchamps are considered more functional. “I got the kids’ backpack because I wanted to relive my childhood and take pictures with my friends. I honestly don’t think they’re fully replacing the kids’ backpacks because people still use them,” senior Elin Asatourian said.
Longchamp purses are larger, lightweight, and ideal for carrying school supplies. The bags are also used by many college students since they are convenient to carry. This new shift is making some seniors stand out in their last year.
The popularity of Longchamp purses can be credited to social media. Students customize their Longchamps by adding keychains, pins, and other accessories that are representative of their personality. This allows students to make their bag a bit more unique to their style. Many claim that using Longchamp bags will take away the nostalgic element of students’ senior year and replace it with one that is more focused on appearance and trends.
Whether the seniors use children’s backpacks or Longchamp bags, the idea of standing out during their last year of high school stays the same. As styles continue to change, seniors will keep creating new traditions that will reflect their individuality as a class.
