(February 28, 2013) — She glances longingly at the letter in her hands as light shines upon her, illuminating the scene. The Woman in Blue Reading a Letter is one of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s most exquisite and well-known pieces. Only a few inches larger than the average piece of paper, the oil on canvas painting has been loaned from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and relocated to the J. Paul Getty Museum. Installed in the Getty Center’s East Pavilion, the Woman in Blue Reading a Letter was unveiled on Feb. 16, and will continue to be on display until March 31. Vermeer is recognized for many exquisite paintings that specialized in household middle class life, particularly the Girl with the Pearl Earring, which has been relocated to San Francisco. The Woman in Blue Reading a Letter ’s display is surrounded by oil paintings of fellow Dutch painters. It is worth a trip to the Getty for appreciating work of true masters of art.
