(November 15, 2012) — A small group of seniors scoped out Glendale Community College’s campus Nov. 1 for the school’s Student Shout Out Day. Headed by Counselor Karine Turdjian, the visit allowed students to experience part of a day in the life of a college student through attending classes, touring the campus, and learning facts focusing on GCC’s education and programs. “Usually GCC allows me to bring 50 students,” said Turdjian, “but because of money problems I was only allowed to bring 25, even though I brought 28.” Student ambassadors of GCC’s Outreach Program AS (Associates of Students) took groups of three to four seniors to two-hour classes. “Since there were only select classes, we went to ones that we were interested in,” said senior Rasha Dandachi, who found out about the field trip opportunity through Turdjian while Dandachi was turning in fundraising money. “We thought that psychology would be fun and ended up going to a class called Child Development and Parenthood. It was a good two hours long and we were shown a video with cute little kids.” Having visited an honors chemistry class, senior Anna Baburyan said that the instruction seemed strange, as the professor would not stop to make sure that everybody understood the lesson. “He would just move from one subject to one subject,” said Baburyan. “I’m not sure if the students understood what he was talking about because the lesson was all over the place.” According to Turdjian, GCC’s Student Outreach Program not only organized the Student Shout Out Day, but also gave a presentation that featured information on different departments and programs available, financial aid, admission process and the college itself. “[The ambassadors] made sure that the students knew everything that they needed to know before applying for the campus,” Turdjian said. Baburyan said that she left the campus knowing much more about GCC than she had beforehand. “In a way I was happy that I went because GCC is a backup plan and it’s possible that I might end up there, so I want to be familiar with everyone and I even got to know the counseling members,” she said.
