(November 15, 2012) — I found myself sitting in my room earlier this month at 2 a.m. scrolling through my timeline on Twitter, which at the time consisted of One Direction fans and Youtube links followed by incomplete and spastic sentences. The links, of course, led me to One Direction’s newly-released single “Little Things” on their new album Take Me Home . With the release of “Live While We’re Young,” the first single off Take Me Home, I was under the impression that the entire album would closely resemble Up All Night , their debut album. As the song played for the first time, I found myself passively listening to the lyrics and laughing at what I thought were random lyrics. But for the following few hours, I heard nothing but five British boys singing my insecurities away. As each member is introduced in the song, more tear-jerking lyrics made its way into the hearts of many. Although the song was originally written by Ed Sheeran, a famous British singer and songwriter, having One Direction record it was one of the best collaborative moves the two groups have ever made. The slow and more relaxed beat along with matured voices contributes to the intimate feeling throughout the entirety of the song. The purely-acoustic track, free from any drastic editing and other distracting instruments, showcases their their singing abilities through each member’s own solo. The emotional song reaches out to the band’s millions of adoring fans. One standout line: “I know you’ve never loved the sound of your voice on tape/you never want to know how much you weigh/you still have to squeeze into your jeans/but you’re perfect to me.” To someone who isn’t a fan or doesn’t appreciate their music, these lyrics will seem extremely cheesy and lacking depth. However, for a fan, each line reassures every girl listening that they should free themselves of the insecurities the face on a daily basis. “Little Things” is just one of many songs on Take Me Home that proves the band’s talent to those who believe that One Direction is nothing but a group of pretty faces. Their looks and singing abilities come together to create a band that millions of girls cry over. They have taken the world by storm, and anyone who disagrees can only admire the millions in their bank account, their shelves of awards, and their posters plastered on every girl’s bedroom walls.
