(Nov. 22, 2011) — The Internet is one of the best ways to get talent known and spammed all over the place. Take Greyson Chance, for example, who became known world-wide for his jaw-droppingly talented video posted on YouTube of him performing a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” This sparked Chance’s musical career. His debut album, Hold On ‘Til the Night , produced by Ellen Degeneres’s label, eleveneleven, contains a mixture of songs with catchy beats and tunes, although the album seems rather expected for a new teenage artist. Chance undoubtedly has an impressive set of pipes, although the majority of Hold On ‘til the Night does not do his voice justice. While his songs do show off his vocal range and amount of power his voice has, nearly all of them don’t have the best lyrical content. The album contains mostly songs about random girls who Chance would either be in love with or broken-hearted from (It’s not like that’s ever been sung about before.) His album has two singles, “Waiting Outside the Lines” and “Unfriend You.” Chance contributed to the writing of “Waiting Outside the Lines,” and it is undeniably the most empowering and deep song on the album, dealing hardships and never giving up. But on the other hand, “Unfriend You” just sounds absolutely ridiculous. It mentions Chance becoming hurt by a girl and him choosing to “unfriend” her from his heart and life. Apparently unfriending people is not limited to only social networking sites. On the bright side, listening to Chance belt out throughout the song distracts the listener from how silly the lyrics are. It’s songs like “Unfriend You” that can’t help but make me think that this album should be sung by a girl, rather than by Chance. “Stranded,” his song about wanting to be “stranded on an island” with his special gal, is so much like other songs heard of teenage girls wanting to be with that “one boy” all the time. But as with “Unfriend You,” the cheery, whimsical tune of the song teamed up with Chance’s voice makes the listener forget what he’s actually saying. Hold On ‘Til the Night is like the typical teen’s “love” album, but for a debut set, it’s not too shabby and is rather high-rolling, especially considering it is recorded with producers like Billy Steinberg (who has worked with artists like Enrique Iglesias) and The Matrix, which has done the same with Britney Spears, Jason Mraz and Christina Aguilera. Chance’s music is nice to listen to as a pastime, though it would not be the first choice on my iPod.
