(June 10, 2011) — Every year, many seniors, just like Alique Berberian, invest a large amount of money into making their last year of high school unforgettable. Although they have good intentions, seniors tend to have excessive senior expenses. “I spent around $1,500 this year,” said Berberian. “It all went towards AP tests, SATs, college applications, SIR deposits, the Catalina trip and prom.” During the last year of high school, seniors take part in more school-hosted events for student pleasure and academics. Berberian said she finds that it is inevitable for a student to pay a lot of money in order to finish high school on a great note. “There’s no way to escape some of these expenses like paying for college applications, SATs and AP tests,” said Berberian. Senior events such as senior prom are just one of many factors that can make seniors enjoy their last year. Most students often associate the word “prom” with ideas of dresses, tuxedos or what form of transportation will be taken. However, senior events such as prom or field trips to Catalina Island also require money. The tickets to the senior trip to Catalina began at $80 and increased to $120 with time. “I could have chosen not to attend prom or the class trip to Catalina, but I’m glad I went to both because it really added to my high school experience,” Berberian said. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good senior year, but spending a little more does have its perks.” Senior prom tickets ranged from $65 to $110 this year. Most seniors who go to prom know that the ticket is not the only thing they have to pay for. “Some girls spend money on nails, hair, an expensive dress, dress shoes and getting their makeup done, which can add up to hundreds dollars,” said senior Lynette Hacopian. “Because most of it is only for one night, it’s unnecessary.”
