(May 27, 2010) — On May 12, Key Club members from both Glendale High and Clark came together to help out at the ninth annual “Taste of Downtown Glendale.” The event, hosted by Glendale Healthy Kids and the Glendale Association for the Retarded, allowed people to sample food from 46 different restaurants, more than ever before. Tickets cost $25 each, and in exchange, the participants were given a red wristband that gave them access to samples set inside or in front of the stores. The event lasted from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and over 1100 tickets were sold. Key Club members were stationed in front of the businesses to help guide people to the participating restaurants. Freshmen Anahit Khachatryan and Diana Karapetyan helped out at Da Juice Bar, were they handed out free samples of frozen yogurt, fruit smoothies and tuna on crackers. “This was Da Juice Bar’s first year of participating,” said Karapetyan, who is also the Key Club vice president. “Every year more and more stores and people are participating.” In fact, 14 more stores participated this year than last, many of which participated last year, too. Others, like Sed Thee, a Thai restaurant that is only three months old, participated for the first time. Businesses participate for free but while they don’t get any of the profits, they do get to advertise themselves to many who may not have even known about them before. Khachatryan said she was overjoyed at the turnout and response to the event. “We like helping out, especially since it was for a really good cause,” she said. “I got to meet so many people,” said Khachatryan, who wasn’t expecting as many people to show up as actually did. “We also got to meet new people in Key Club, including some from Glendale High,” Karapetyan said. The event is one of Glendale Healthy Kids’ biggest fundraisers, the money from which will be used to find low-cost health care for kids from low-income and uninsured families. In addition, the money also helps fund events such as For the Kids Health Fair, which offers many different types of health screenings for kids, free of charge. At the end of the event, all of the volunteers, inside or out of Key Club, were able to try the food themselves at no charge, in exchange for the help they had given.
