(May 8, 2009) — On April 7 students, parents, and teachers from Crescenta Valley, Hoover, Glendale and Clark Magnet High School gathered at Hoover High School for the ninth Annual Junior Scholastic Bowl. At the event, a team of four to five students from each school competed to win the trophy by answering the most questions. Questions came from many different categories, including but not limited to literature, math, art, music, chemistry, biology and architecture. Clark’s team consisted of sophomores Allen Sarkisyan, Hana Bae, Stella Yi, Aaron Castillo and junior Arielle Chongco. The team finished in last place with only eight points compared to the first place team, Glendale High, which had about 27 points. “We lost because we had two new people on our team who weren’t used to the questions, so we didn’t do so well,” Bae said. She thought later that she should have participated in the buzzer round and let Yi come in for the collaborative round since only four members can be in for each round. Bae felt that she knew more answers for the buzzer round than the collaborative, but she couldn’t answer because she was rotated out. Clark also got fourth place in the Varsity Scholastic Bowl in March. Crescenta Valley took first place, beating Glendale by only one point.
