(December 11, 2007) — A recent report on schools in the United States ranked Clark in the top three percent. On Nov. 29, U.S. News & World Report , together with School Evaluation Services, looked at more than 18,000 schools and gave 100 of them a gold medal, meaning that they had met all three criteria looked at. As a silver medalist, Clark was in the top three percent of all the schools, along with Hoover High and Crescenta Valley High. Silver medals were awarded if the school passed the first two out of three criteria but didn’t have a high enough college readiness index to be a gold medalist. Bronze medals were awarded if the school passed the fi rst two criteria but didn’t have a college readiness index of at least 20. Clark’s college readiness index was 30.1 out of 100. Our non-disadvantaged students recieved a proficiency rate of 98.8, which is 3.1 points above the average. The least-advantaged students got a proficiency rate of 95.7, which is 48.6 points above the average. When Principal Doug Dall was asked if he thought that he had helped the school achieve this award, he said no. “The students and teachers earned the award for the school,” he said. He also said that the college readiness score didn’t mean anything to him. “Many of our students go to college and didn’t take an AP test.” Despite this, he said that the recognition was a great accomplishment for the school, the students and the teachers. The first criteria looked at was how the schools’ students were doing on their high school tests based on the average in their state. Then, they looked at how the schools’ least-advantaged (black, Hispanic, and low-income) students were doing based on the state’s average for least-advantaged students. The last criteria tested the schools’ collage readiness index using the Advanced Placement (AP) scores for the school. The college readiness index was based on the participation in AP tests and how many seniors at the school took and passed (got a 3 or higher).
