Four weeks have passed since New Year’s Day. In these four weeks, most people who made New Year’s resolutions have started on their pledges to improve themselves, try something new, or complete a goal. Some of these are one-time goals while other last all year. Freshman Alyssa Mathew set a goal of that magnitude when she made the resolution to “go green.” “The commercials convinced me to go green,” Mathew said. “I am motivated because it is important to me.” Not all people are as good at keeping their resolutions, though. As the New Year approached, junior Asher Silberman made two resolutions: draw more sketches and to find a college and prepare for it. Now one month into 2009 he has started sketching more, but his college search has yet to start. “I want to go to colleges and research them to see which classes have which requirements,” Silberman said. Silberman, who has decided to start searching in spring, says that even though he made the resolution he has no motivation to start looking yet. “It’s a senior year resolution so it is not due until next year.” Another reason for putting it off is that he says it is more difficult and less fun than his other resolution so he feels less motivation to get started. He is not the only one who feels this way. If a resolution is made, students may not keep it if it is not fun, exciting, or an important change. Senior Jeremiah Garcia made a resolution to stop procrastinating on homework but hasn’t yet started. “It’s not going well because I am not motivated to do it,” Garcia said. Garcia said that he isn’t sure that making a resolution can actually help motivate people to change. On the other hand, he doesn’t think that it is useless to make one. “I honestly did not believe that making a New Year’s resolution [would help], but maybe if there is a chance I can change it could help.” Some students have easy times fulfilling their New Year’s Resolutions while others seem to have a difficult job trying to complete them before the end of the year. Motivation seems to play an important part in helping to finish resolutions. Maybe students who haven’t finished their resolutions will find the motivation before the year is finished.
