As a debut album, Bombs Away from indie pop band Sheppard establishes itself as a significantly well-produced record due to its uniqueness and musical composition. Though it isn’t something that’s completely out of this world (in contrast with its album cover of an astronaut in outer space), it’s still a fun time nonetheless.

The single “Geronimo” ends up being one of the best songs on the album. The hit single of an album is rarely the best song the band has to offer. However, “Geronimo” is not only a catchy tune, but it’s also quite original and just a plain joy to listen to.

Another one of the greatest songs on the record is “Find Someone,” the ninth track. Again, the tune here is extravagantly catchy and the lyrics are pleasantly meaningful. Although it uses some forms of explicit language, it’s profane with a purpose, rather than just gratuitously crude. It uses its diction to stress the songs mood, and does so successfully.

Perhaps one of the most different aspects of this album in comparison to other indie bands, and just bands in general, is that each song alternates with its lead singer. At times it’ll be keyboard player George Sheppard, and at others it’ll be vocalist Amy Sheppard. This gives the whole album this overall sense of diversity, which is immensely refreshing.

All in all, Bombs Away is definitely worth a listen. Though the band is more so an indie band as opposed to an indie pop band, the songs still have this great energy to them without using overcomplicated synthesizers and whatnot. All Sheppard needs are their simple instruments and familiar unity to craft such lovely music.
