“I thought the Halloween costume contest was really fun and creative,” said junior John Junio, who dressed as a panda. “There were funnier costumes this year. The costumes this year were better than last year and my favorite costume was by Henry who dressed as a cheerleader.”

At 11:30, the annual Halloween costume contest began at the base of the amphitheater, where students were anxious to see their fellow classmates participate. Students were allowed to wear a scary or creative costume to impress the judges and win the competition. Treats were given to all participants and the winners received an iTunes gift card for $25. Students quickly surrounded the area.

Participants walked across the amphitheatre once their name was called, showing off their costume while students laughed and yelled. There were many creative costumes that appeared in the contest such as the grandparents, a penguin, the Greek goddess of snow and an astronaut. “I wasn’t expecting these costumes this year,” said junior Calvin Bayaua. “There were a lot of costumes I found interesting such as the pimp, assassin, dark angel and Waldo.”

As junior Jacquelyn Goryan announced all the participants to the catwalk, numerous students were cheering on their friends who entered the competition. After all the participants were announced, the announcer and teachers decided on who will be the winners for this year’s contest. The teachers that decided on the winners were Eric Kursinski, Anne Reinhard, Elaine Snodgress, and Amir Ghavam. The crowd and participants were nervous to hear the winners of the contest.

The winners in first place were seniors Alisa Karakozian and Liana Blkhoian, who dressed up as grandparents. Second place was sophomore Alex Fenyes who dressed up as an astronaut and sophomore Sebastian Velazquez who won third place as “God’s gift to women.”  “I wanted to do something different this year,” Blkhoian said. “I entered the competition before and I’m so glad I won this year. I’m the vice-president of Drama Club and the members convinced me to dress as an old lady since I’m a funny person.”

“I liked how the grandparents had a story to their performance,” said US history teacher Eric Kursinski, who dressed as Waldo. “I thought that was the most creative catwalk with the whole falling and life alert situation. It was really well done and they had to walk down together as an old couple, to me that was really clever.”

The contest was different this year due to all the creative costumes presented in the contest. Many students, such as juniors Henry Reed who dressed up as a cheerleader and Claire Garcia who dressed up as Marty Mcfly, wanted to sign up at the day of the competition. However, they were too late to sign up to enter because there was only a specific amount of time to join the competition.
