Clark alumni give advice

(May 24, 2013) — Even after reading almost every forum on College Confidential, there are still questions that remain unanswered. With the hope of alleviating the stress brought on by college and answering lingering questions, teacher Chris Davis and counselors Karine Turdjian and Susan Howe organized the second annual Senior Horizons seminar. A panel of nine alumni, varying from music history majors to CEO’s of clothing companies, came back to Clark on May 2, walking through memory lane and to advise seniors on the upcoming years of their lives.

In order to ensure an event that wasn’t overwhelming and got every question answered, the alumni were divided up into a total of three groups which visited three different rooms of 10-20 students. “The way it was set up was really organized, and it really gave us a chance to get each alumni well,” Rubina Tahmazyan said.

She particularly found the alumnis’ very different experiences and perspectives helpful. “The main thing I took away was that as long as you love what you’re doing, that’s all that matters,” Tahmazyan said.

For Edit Mirzahanyan, it had been really difficult to find all the information she was searching for on the Internet, so being able to attend a face-to-face event was beneficial. “I really liked that I got to get insight from alumni because it opened up the real world to me from people who were once exactly where I am now,” Mirzahanyan said.

As compensation for Senior Horizons being scheduled during standardized testing, when seniors didn’t need to be in school, students enjoyed bananas, juice and donuts. “The reassurance that all our hard work actually pays off was worth hearing, and the donuts were a nice touch,” Mirzahanyan said.
