(May 2, 2013) — After a week of friendly competition, tension and anticipation, ASB and class officer candidates found out on Friday, April 26 whether they had won enough votes to make them a part of the 2013-2014 ASB class. Some candidates were running for ASB for the first time, while others were returning students. One of the returning students is current sophomore class treasurer Laura Vardanyan. She ran for the same position and will be the junior class treasurer next year. Vardanyan says that she is very well prepared to take on the task of being the treasurer as she has acquired an extensive amount of knowledge about making deposits and handling checks. “I know what my job is all about,” Vardanyan said. “And I know what I am going to do next year.” Vardanyan plans on doing her best to aid the class of 2015 in raising a sufficient amount of money for prom. Her goal is to have a successful prom, and in order to accomplish that, she plans on having more fundraisers with Pinkberry and Panda Express. Overall, Vardanyan saw this year as “successful” but she hopes to improve next year by making sure certain fundraisers take place. “One problem we had this year was whenever we couldn’t get In-N-Out for the Clarktoberfest,” Vardanyan said. “I hope we get it next year because we will earn a lot more money.” Vardanyan says that after seeing successful results, her class plans to fundraise with the Old Fashion Candy Company again. Also, she plans on having better fundraisers outside of school. Since the class did not earn a lot from BJ’s fundraisers, she plans on raising more money from outside-of-school events next year. “We just need to plan more,” Vardanyan said. Another returning student is current sophomore class secretary Elen Kazariants, who is moving up to become ASB Secretary next year. She says that the new position brings with it some new tasks that can be stressful, while it allows her to be less involved in other activities. “Every Tuesday and Thursday I’m going to have to take meeting minutes, and I’m going to have to mail it to my advisor and all the other officers,” Kazariants said. “Since this is for ASB, I’m going to be less involved in class fundraisers outside of the classroom.” However, she will be involved in ASB fundraisers such as selling Santa Picture tickets and coordinating the Habit truck for Clarktoberfest. In addition to ASB fundraising, Kazariants hopes to successfully fundraise for her class’s prom. Freshman class president Timothy Cruz will also be returning next year as the sophomore class president. Despite a “hectic” year, Cruz says that he is “not that nervous” for next year, since he has gained experience as president of his class. Much like Vardanyan and Kazariants, Cruz would like to see his class raise as much money as they can for prom. “I’d like to see more people joining the committee and trying to help raise money for their own class,” Cruz said. According to Cruz, ASB has already come up with a plan of what fundraisers will take place for each class. Even though the plan is not yet official, Cruz says that next year will “be a lot simpler.” With intentions of improving the class as whole, Cruz would like to see his class be “more ahead of the game” and to do things more ahead of time.
