SCARY STORY CONTEST WINNER: Alina Sargsian, Junior

It was a dark and stormy night in the town of Sheermanville. The town that was always bright and sunny was now dark and windy. All the children were excited because the weather had finally changed and it was the best night of them all, it was Halloween. Everyone was laughing, decorating, and planning their costumes, except for the little house in the end of the street. People in the neighborhood would see an old couple in this house, but no one would talk with them because rumors had it that they were witches, vampires, or killers. The woman looked in her early 60’s, but she would always smoke a black cigarette and looked depressed when she saw children laughing at them. The old man never came out of the house, and every Halloween night, people would see from the window, candles and praying. The people in the neighborhood would ignore the couple because they never seemed to bother anyone. However, this night would change everything.

It was 9 o’clock and Mike and his girlfriend Caroline wanted to go out and trick or treat. They went to many houses and were at the house with the old married couple. Caroline wanted to go in and talk with them because the old woman was on her front porch with candy and crying. The old woman’s face shined brighter than a child receiving candy. Mike and Caroline greeted the old woman, while she dumped the whole bucket of candy in their bags. She asked them if they would like to come in and drink tea since the weather was so horrible. Caroline agreed and Mike went in after her. Caroline excused herself and asked to go see the husband. When she walked in the room, the husband was horrified and threw things at her. The woman apologized and said he hates visitors and that he cannot speak. The woman went back to Mike, while Caroline went back inside the old man’s room. The man quickly got a paper and wrote, “Help me, its.” Caroline was terrified at this point. She tried to communicate, but he could not speak and all he said was help.

The old woman ran back into her husband’s room and said, “Sorry, he has a form of schizophrenia.” She dragged Caroline’s hand and whispered something to the old man. They were back with Mike, and he was sure enjoying himself with different types of food and candy. Caroline wanted to leave at this point, but she wanted to know what the old man meant. The woman offered many things, but Caroline didn’t take any of them. The woman went to make tea while Caroline rushed to the man’s room again and tried to communicate. He looked happy to see her, but said, “it kill go.” Caroline knew that she had to get the old man out of there, somehow. However, her plan was not the only thing that failed.

Caroline saw Mike asleep on the couch, she tried to wake him up, but he would not even open his eyes. She knew that the woman had drugged her and rushed back to the old man’s room, while calling the police. Caroline dragged the old man out of bed and tried to escape with him from the window this was nearly impossible because the old man could not walk, they were on the second floor, and the weather was horrible. While she tried to escape with the old man, Caroline saw the old woman racing towards her with a bat.

When Caroline awoke, she saw the old woman on the floor crying. She got up laughing and took a mirror from her purse, showing the old woman and walked away. Caroline put something in her purse and the police arrived with Mike. The old woman was screaming, “She is trying to kill me.” Caroline said she had a form of schizophrenia and Mike just hugged her and was glad that she was alright. The young couple left the crazy house and Caroline took a black cigarette out of her purse and smoked it while saying, “I will always love you Mike.”
