(May 5, 2003) — If you happened to catch sophomore Hatty Lee lounging in her living room on the couch, it would be a rare moment. The active Lee says she gets bored easily and needs to do a lot of different things to keep herself going. “Everyone wants to stay home and relax,” says Lee, “but I need to be active. Furthermore, Lee finds herself bombarded with anxieties that come from a family whose mom works six days of the week, late at night, and whose brother is stationed in Iraq with the Marines. However, kickboxing and other forms of exercise help her stress under control. It was when Lee and her friend passed by a kickboxing class in session at 24 Hour Fitness that an interest sparked in the two. Lee signed up for the class in December and is still an active member often attending Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. When asked why she keeps at it, Lee answered, “It’s energizing. You don‘t think much about anything besides ‘punch, kick, punch.’” This mind clearing aspect of martial arts keeps Lee involved. The class begins with a few stretching exercises and leads into a routine led by the instructor. The routines include basic moves that are put together in a repetitious pattern and executed in a fat-burning and heart-pumping workout. The routines get “harder, faster, and more difficult” with each class—“You need coordination,” says Lee, who is also experienced in choreographed dance, drill team, and flags. “The instructor won’t slow down for you.” In the last 10-15 minutes of the hour-long class, Lee usually finishes up with some crunches and sit-ups to get back to a resting heart rate. Lee has a hectic schedule yet still manages to find time to take part in other things, especially church. She spends five out of seven days of the week attending prayer meetings, services, praise team practice, and occasional rallies. As for the near future, “I’ve actually thought about becoming an instructor,” she joked. Lee isn’t thinking about giving up kickboxing any time soon and encourages the sport to anyone who enjoys challenging and fun exercise.
