Clash Royale is a game known for its magical kingdom and powerful decks of cards. This mobile strategy-based game was released on March 2, 2016, by Supercell and has recaptured the attention of teenagers worldwide.
Clash Royale is a competitive game where each player has 3 towers they must protect while trying to take down their opponent’s towers. An opponent is successfully defeated by using characters known as “cards”. During a battle cards are used to destroy an opponent and level up in the game. As more battles are won players unlock more powerful cards.
Clash Royale has returned to the spotlight due to the attention it’s received on social media. Jynxzi, a famous gaming influencer, brought Clash back to life with his following of 1.36 million on YouTube.
Jynxzi is originally known for filming videos of himself playing Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. Since then, he has spent hours playing Fortnite, Call of Duty, and many other popular games.
Social media has also helped this game regain popularity through platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, where many people are seen obsessing over the game. Teenage girls joke on social media that their boyfriends would rather play Clash Royale than spend time with them.
While this is a more male-dominated game on social media, there are many girls who have also been greatly influenced. “I started seeing videos of people talking about Clash Royale on TikTok and it looked interesting. Once I downloaded it, I realized how fun it was to verse my friends and unlock new decks of cards,” senior Kayla Dilanchian said
How has Clash Royale kept its popularity in a world filled with mobile games? Supercell changes the balance of the game by tweaking the strength of each card. Every few months, some cards become weaker while others become stronger, keeping players hooked and willing to see what cards will help them win the most battles. “Clash Royale’s popularity is justified because it has perfected the mobile game formula, beating out competitors by having fast-paced matches and attracting a broader audience,” Vice President of Video Game club, Henry Israyelan said.
Any strategy-based game is a great alternative to “doom scrolling,” aka spending hours scrolling on social media. It allows people to engage in “friendly battles” with peers, which strengthens strategy.
Furthermore, Clash Royale has “clans” people can join with your friends, where you can engage in friendly battles and use emotes. Emotes are a form of communication through these clans, similar to emojis, where friends can cheer each other on or joke around.
“Imagine you’re losing a game and your opponent mocks you with a crying emote, in a lot of cases, I use emotes to frustrate my opponents,” said senior Armen Agadzhanyan.
Clash Royale is a kingdom come back to life. Around the world, people are building new strategies, decks of cards, and friendships through this game. Hopefully, through the continuance of card evolution and social media acknowledgement, Clash Royale’s reign shall live on!
