‘Pitch Perfect’ takes the screen, again

Back in 2012, Pitch Perfect hit the movie theatres with a bang; everyone was talking about its witty humor and catchy music. So when Pitch Perfect 2 was released just a couple of days ago, the hype was back, and once again its young fans ran to their local theatres to see the energetic Fat Amy crack a few of her sly jokes.

First off, the plot of Pitch Perfect 2, or We’re Back Pitches 2, is strikingly similar to the first movie. The acappella group of college girls are faced with public embarrassment, thus tarnishing their name as a group. With the leadership of Anna Kendrick as Beca, the girls must then figure out how to work together in order to beat another group in a competition that will hopefully help them regain their reputation.

The dialogue of the film is generally humorous; although some of the lines seem predictable, it’s hard not to smile here and there. Fat Amy’s banter is especially enjoyable given the tension that builds among the other members of their group. It is interesting to see the dilemma from both their points of view as they comment on other characters to one another, volleying insults and compliments in a funny and unique matter.

The best part of Pitch Perfect 2 is its dumbly entertaining humor. Like the first movie, the characters are unique and fun; Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy is equally hilarious and Anna Kendrick as Beca is as likeable as before. Despite Kendrick’s good performance in the second movie, however, Kendrick is relatively dull in comparison to her other films. Regardless, the characters stay  true to their personalities and do not disappoint; it is the plot that seems rather repetitive.

If you haven’t seen the first Pitch Perfect, then don’t waste your time watching the second one — pick one and stick to it. Under those conditions, Pitch Perfect 2 wouldn’t be a terrible way to spend your Friday night. That is, if you enjoy stupid humor and a series of 104.3 pop songs sung acapella.
