(May 2, 2013) — After watching the Twilight movies, my expectations for watching movies with wolves and vampires are low; in my opinion, vampires should burn in the sun, not glitter like Swarovski Crystals. After doing some research, I discovered Hemlock Grove , a brand new series that was released on Netflix on April 19. The series is about a sequence of strange occurrences in an old steel town in Pennsylvania called Hemlock Grove. The immediate downside about trying to watch the show is that it is only available on Netflix. However, there is also an advantage to that, because Netflix’s shows are released entire seasons at a time, which meant that the show’s 13 episodes were available for viewing at once. Within the first five minutes of the first episode, there is a sex scene, almost immediately followed by a death. The show’s two protagonists, Roman Godfrey and Peter Rumancek, become an unlikely duo to try to solve a murder mystery. It is unclear as to why they are trying to solve the murder, because both characters do not have any relations with the girl murdered. One unfortunate thing about the show is that the plot develops extremely slowly. For eleven episodes, the viewer is confused because it is unclear as to what kind of monsters the characters are. Roman Godfrey’s sister seems to look like a giant modern Frankenstein’s monster, but she converses with others. In the second episode, viewers find out that Peter Rumancek is a werewolf, and his reason for searching for the murderer is because that person is a werewolf as well. The show is very gruesome; the characters vomit left and right, losing fingernails painfully, and transform into werewolves so realistically that viewers are glued to the screen. Despite the gore, there are few developments made within the first eleven episodes, and the rest of the season slowly chugs to the season finale. Then suddenly, the plot moves so quickly that viewers receive a mental whiplash, and are left hanging at the end of the thirteenth episode. Even with the slow plot, I am now desperate for the next season. Dozens of new discoveries are made in the final episode, all in the interest of keeping the viewers interested and excited for season two. The biggest negative is not knowing whether there will be a season two, and I’m going to have to wait a year to see.
