(May 3, 2013) — With the annual Relay for Life event quickly approaching, students are preparing for another year of participating in the 24-hour marathon of fun and commemoration, In what will be the eighth year participating as a team, the over 30 members of “Panthers Against Cancer,” the school’s Relay for Life team, have been hard at work getting ready for the event, scheduled to take place May 11 from 9 a.m. through 9 a.m. on May 12. However, beyond the emotional experience that is present at Relay For Life, the event provides many interesting activities to participate even while raising awareness for cancer. “The year end Relay for Life, which is at Clark, is a festival type thing which has games, music, food, and all of it is to raise money,” said team co-captain Sarin Mousessian. Beyond just walking laps during the day, students will also be entertained by sports, live music and games. According to Mousessian, each year presents a unique variety of activities including “a water balloon toss, different games where you can buy a ticket and the money goes to relay [and] raffles where you can win prizes.” However, beyond the fun and games present at the event, the highlight of the night is always the Luminaria Ceremony. During the ceremony, students, community members and cancer survivors take candles and walk laps around the event, in commemoration of those who have passed away. “Basically its to remember those people who have died because of cancer and just to have more hope for the future,” said Mousessian. After the Luminaria ceremony, participants either settle down and camp in the center of the field for the night, continue to walk laps around the field, or participate in nighttime activities, such as the night-time movie. “It’s actually fun. We have people bring different foods all day and night,” said Axelgard, “and they also start a movie at about 2 or 3 in the morning.” Those interested in participating in the Relay for Life event or donating money to support the fight against cancer can go to http://relay.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/ to get involved.
