Seniors, get set for City Lights

6ab9882a-8f0a-4747-b049-8a7899dd6f0f-prom(May 3, 2013) — It is nearly party time as seniors are ready for tomorrow’s prom at the Odyssey in Granada Hills. An event that has been in the works since the seniors set foot on Clark, ASB and class officers are in the final stages of getting the City Lights-themed dance ready to enjoy.

“For me, someone who’s been in ASB since 10th grade,” said senior Adrine Oganyan, “as long as I can remember our main objective was to make a great prom.” According to Oganyan, ASB and the Class of 2013 has been fundraising since the class’s first days at Clark up until one month prior to prom; the month away the Class and ASB stops fundraising and starts spending. The fundraising is the base from which the Class knows how much it can spend to make the night extravagant.

“We wouldn’t want to feel like we didn’t use the theme to our advantage,” Oganyan said. Oganyan stated how the senior committee wanted to use the City Lights theme to their advantage, and incorporated it into the decorations. After years of planning, seniors are looking forward to the big night. “It finally hit me when we were about to start selling tickets,” Oganyan said. “I realized that all these years fundraising events and activities have lead up to those ticket sales.”

The students have been hard at work coordinating with vendors, hiring the DJ, and keeping up to date with plans at the Odyssey. As it is Clark’s first prom at this restaurant, members of the senior committee went to the location on Jan. 24 to check up on the venue and decide what food will be served. According to Oganyan, even as far back as their sophomore year, committee members have been looking at and visiting restaurants, eventually having to come to a consensus after multiple meetings regarding which venue to rent. As the dance quickly approaches, seniors are preparing for getting fancy in their gowns, suits and ties, renting limousines and party buses, planning after-parties, and much more.

Similar to many girls, senior Monica Khechumian began searching for a dress online. “I had found a dress that I fell in love with because it doesn’t look like any other dress,” Khechumian said, “but when I went to the store to try it on, they didn’t have it. And no other store that I checked out had it either.” With figuring out which date is getting corsages and boutonnieres, who is riding who’s party bus, and — do these shoes match with my dress? — in the process of organizing their evening, small amounts of stress accumulates amongst the students. “At times I just can’t wish until this is all over,” Khechumian said, “but then I remember how much fun it is to plan and prepare [for Prom]. It’s all going to be worth it.”
