(May 2, 2013) — We’re all looking forward to summer, right? Who wouldn’t be? Well, our summer is going to be cut a little short this year because of the new early start calendar. You take the entire school year and push it somewhere else. What I’m saying is that school will start in the middle of August as opposed to the beginning of September. Of course, that means school will end early, too, but there’s no difference in the amount of days spent at school. It’s still going to be 180 days. But, I guess there’s some good to this… maybe… For instance, we get to finish the first semester before Christmas break. Well, is that going to stop teachers from giving us ridiculous time consuming projects and other homework? Nope. Sure, we’ll have the one or two teachers who know what vacation means, but there will always be teachers who insist on making us work no matter what. That’s just cruel and unusual punishment. Besides, we’re going to be tired from taking all those finals. We need a break from it all. If we didn’t have the early start calendar, first semester would finish after Christmas break in January, but at least we would have the break to study for finals. Well, those who actually study would have time to do so. Another fantastic thing about starting early is that we get to go to school when it’s really hot! Yay, burning hot sun! Okay, no one really thinks like that, but seriously, it’s pretty warm in August. I’m not sure about you, but I’m going to feel bad for the freshmen and sophomores who have to run out in the sun for P.E. Like I mentioned before, we have to move around the calendar so we can start in the middle of August. This shortens our summer, messing with our vacation time. We won’t be getting our much needed “104 days of summer vacation” because school will come earlier to end it. So, do I agree with the new early start calendar? No, I do not. I feel that it has made our lives a little crazy. I liked starting school in September/late August. I know this sounds a little mean, but it was fun bragging to my friends, who were starting school in August, that I was going to start in September. Because school started later, I felt like summer was longer. When school starts in mid August, I’m really going to miss the old days of starting school late.
