(April 2, 2013) — Watch out, Justin Bieber. There is a new pop star on the rise who is about to challenge everything you have ever worked for. With a whopping 1.9 million Facebook fans and 1.7 million Twitter followers, Austin Mahone, a resident of La Vernia, Texas, is well on his way to living the Hollywood dream. In his new song “Say You’re Just a Friend,” Mahone incorporates beats that are fun and enjoyable to dance to. However, this song is nothing compared to other world renowned pop artists’ songs, such as those of Usher and Pitbull, who really know how to get the party going. But who knows? Maybe someday newbie Mahone will eventually figure it out. On the other hand, it is refreshing to hear lyrics about a new kind of love story. Rather than the overused storyline of the boy chasing and winning over the girl, Mahone sings about the downsides of being friendzoned, a situation in which one is declared to be “just a friend,” thereby destroying all chances of a new relationship. However, his lyrics are irritatingly repetitive and the chorus is sung so often that it sticks in your head and stubbornly refuses to get out. Similar to many of Justin Bieber’s songs, Mahone’s voice seems overly autotuned and incredibly washed out. The song barely passes for decent, but that is mainly due to the fact that the song editors have put an enormous amount of work into it. I would not recommend this song to anyone older than their preteens, as most people got over the Justin Bieber phase around then. Both the song’s lyrics and melody are much too simple to amuse those past their preteens, but even if Mahone does not grow popular among students in high school, he will surely find success in entertaining younger age groups.
