(December 14, 2012) — Students from Matt Stroup’s class decide to enter in the third annual Los Angeles Student Media Festival (LASMF). The 30 students from Stroup’s advanced class will submit 20 one to seven-minute videos as a part of the class in one of the following categories: animation, comedy, commercial, drama or documentary/PSA. The winners from each category will win a $1000 scholarship. The event attracts about 300 entries every year. A seven-minute video may not seem like much, but a lot more work goes into it than most people realize. According to Stroup, a video this long may take 300 to 400 takes. From these takes, only about 100 will be used in the final cut. Sound files are made for any background music, sound effects and voice-overs used in the video. Editing is also part of the process. To get to the final product, students take the best parts of each take and put it together in a seamless fashion so that the video will flow from one scene to the next. Both the visuals and the audio needs to be crisp and clear. The audio shouldn’t overpower what’s being said in the video. Once all that is finished, the video can be submitted. Senior Foozy Davoodi is working on a one to two minute video for the commercial category. Her commercial will be selling a sense of humor, with sophomore Arno Agajanian acting in the video. She said that the pre-production work took days. It involves writing the script, creating storyboards, and having an overall summary of the video. Davoodi is still working on the project and has yet to begin filming. “I don’t even have this class,” Agajanian said, but he said he is having fun working on this project. At first only students from Los Angeles could enter in this competition, but the area was extended to LA County later on. According to Stroup, Clark has had a good relationship with L.A. City Councilmember Paul Krekorian, who is hosting the event. Krekorian has also created and ran for two years another festival, FilmFest 43. FilmFest 43 was open to “young filmmakers” from Burbank, Glendale and parts of Los Angeles. Stroup said that the students from his advanced class are really good this year. Submissions are now being accepted and the media festival will be held on March 30.
