(September 21, 2012) — The other day, while I was walking through the Americana at Brand, I realized something. I really hate how many people wear the obvious trends. This anguish I felt was never before present until now. There are so many overworn, overused trends. Everywhere I look, there’s no doubt that I’ll see someone wearing a maxi skirt or a sheer shirt. I like sheer shirts, but too many people wear them. It’s obviously a popular type of shirt to wear, so why would you buy it? I’m guessing it’s a “fitting in with the crowd” sort of thing. When people wear the same thing, it gets rid of the whole point of style. A person with authentic taste is like an endangered species in our trend obsessed world. Just because something is a trend doesn’t mean you should wear it. Take a moment and look in the mirror. Do you really think buying that maxi skirt from Forever 21 was a good idea? Are you sure you should’ve spent your allowance on that sheer shirt from American Apparel? Did you check twice before you left the house in your Urban Outfitters bandeau? Don’t get me wrong; I love fashion and new trends. I just don’t think everyone should be wearing the latest trends. Trends are supposed to help you guide your style and your taste in clothing. You have to know how to put an outfit together before you wear it. Don’t wear something if you aren’t sure about how to wear it. A maxi skirt shouldn’t be coming all the way up past your bellybutton and around your ribcage. They should be placed at the hip. If it was specifically made to be a high-waisted skirt, it goes around the waist and not an inch past it. Certain types and pieces of clothing look good on certain people. Body type is a really important factor in deciding whether a piece of clothing looks good on a person. Wearing a long skirt versus a short skirts is the same as buying the right pair of jeans. If you’re short, you don’t buy jeans that stop right at the ankle. If you’re tall, you don’t buy over-elongated jeans. Buying something that doesn’t fit your body type just won’t look good. Along with body type there’s style. You have to style clothing in a way that will not only enhance your features, but also complement the other pieces of clothing. You wouldn’t match bright pants with a neon shirt or a jean jacket with jean shorts, right? Hopefully, no one will make that mistake. Wearing the latest trends doesn’t show your individual style. It just shows that you know how to shop at a mall.
