(September 19, 2012) — Not everyone has the opportunity to work as an intern in a top company making advertisements and demo videos, but senior Alex Deravanessian gets to do this and gain valuable skills. Deravanessian has been interning at Arecont Vision in Glendale since the summer of 2011. “I was having lunch with a friend of mine who works there and he told me that they could use somebody to intern there to do all this promotional stuff for them,” Deravanessian said. Deravanessian has learned how to walk into a meeting, how to talk to one’s boss and how to work with other employees and other people in general. “I made promotional videos for their product…so I would make commercials for them,” Deravanessian said. “I would make advertisements and demo videos showing them how to use the camera.” Deravanessian enjoys the work atmosphere, the people he works with and the tools he gets to use, including computers, cameras and props, but he had a hard time getting used to the new softwares he had to learn and get used to. He said he has to take on a lot of responsibility that he is not normally used to. If he doesn’t do a certain job correctly, he could get fired or at least receive come consequence. Deravanessian would rather go to work than go to school. “I much prefer working, because a boss is much more realistic about expectation than a teacher. Plus, after work, when you come home at six or seven, you’re done for the day, not facing four to five hours of homework,” Deravanessian said. Even though Deravanessian enjoys his internship, he would not want to make it his career. “I just like video editing and it’s a good skill to have, but I don’t want to pursue marketing as a career. I still want to be an engineer,” Deravanessian said.
