(May 25, 2012) — “It is a fun way to pass time,” said freshman Matthew Davidian about Draw Something, a game in the Apple App store and the Android Market. Draw Something is an addictive social game that has become very popular among teens and even adults. It allows the player to play with a friend or someone random by drawing as well as guessing drawings submitted by their partner. Davidian plays against his friends as well as random people who also play Draw Something. The application allows the player to pick between three different words to draw for their partner. The partner then views the player throughout the process of drawing the word and must unscramble the letters in order to guess the word. The partner then picks between three words and completes the same process. The words of varying difficulties award each partner anywhere from one to three coins depending on the difficulty. According to an article on the BBC website, Draw Something reached 50 million downloads in about 50 days, making it one of the fastest growing games. As of April 2012, Zynga, the owner of the application, claimed there were about six billion drawings created by the players who had downloaded the application. Davidian was one of the users who downloaded the game onto his iPad when he saw a picture of the application on Facebook. Sophomore Allen Dishigrikyan heard about this application through his friends and his mom. Dishigrikyan plays on his iPhone, which has a smaller screen than the iPad, but that does not stop him from playing against his own friends as well as the occasional random people. “I am a good artist and even though there’s not a lot of room to draw, I still manage to draw beautiful pictures,” Dishigrikyan said. Although it is a fun way to pass time, Dishigrikyan joked that he plays to rub in that he’s a better artist than his friends. “I want to prove to them that they aren’t Picassos as they claim, ” Dishigrikyan jokingly said. When these students play, they accumulate coins by guessing the words correctly. The coins can be used to purchase “bombs” or more colors. The “bombs” allow the player to get rid of a few of the scrambled letters in order to make the guessing process easier. Davidian likes to buy more colors in order to add more variety to his color palette, making his drawings more detailed and keeping his friends guessing on the app.
