(April 5, 2012) — After it took the world by storm in the summer of 2008, The Hunger Games ultimately became a pop culture phenomenon. The power of the Capitol was both terrifying yet thrilling to most readers. Because readers like me were eager to see the movie come on the big screen, we were eager to see how the producers along with director Gary Ross would bring to life the spirit and control of Panem to life. Amazingly, the movie is almost identical to the book. Ross and the producers took a science fiction thriller and created movie magic. The movie, although two hours and twenty minutes long, gives the audience a sense of suspense, making the movie an edge-of-the-seat thriller from beginning to end. It keeps the style, meaning, chronological order and plot of the book without skipping, changing or leaving out any piece of the book. The movie centers around the country of Panem and its twelve districts. In the world of Panem, each district has to send two tributes, children between the ages of 12-18, to a fight to the death at the Annual Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are set up by the government to prevent the districts from rebelling against the government. But a strong government isn’t always a good thing. Because the Capital is so preoccupied with preventing another district rebellion, they are blind to the fact that any small action can ignite a rebellion. The movie gives eager readers a very realistic vision of the actual games and horror of reality. However, I believe that the movie is inappropriately rated PG-13. There are areas in the film that are not suitable for young children and pre-teens. I believe that an R-rating would have been much more appropriate taking into consideration the amount of horror and death. The cinematography brought to the big screen is truly unique. The post production editors as well as the cinematographers create a world in which Panem truly comes to life. The movie had a good balance of sound to no sound in the arena, allowing the fear and horror of the games deeply into the viewer. In the film, Katniss Everdeen is portrayed by the ever-talented Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence brings to the role the true image of Katniss that the audience walked into the theater expecting. The all-star cast, along with the director and producers, helps create the perfect movie adaptation of The Hunger Games .
