(Feb. 9, 2012) — On Superbowl Sunday the New York Giants and the New England Patriots played the NFL Championship game in Indianapolis. Many Clark students spent their Sunday afternoon with family and friends watching the close game. Junior Luiza Baloyan watched the game with her cousins in the comfort of her own home and hoped the favored Patriots would win the game. The 2011-2012 season NFL champions came back with under a minute left, but the game wasn’t over until the Patriot’s quarterback Tom Brady’s 51-yard pass was incomplete, winding down the clock to zero. English teacher Conrad Pruitt, a Raiders fan, thought Brady would throw an interception, but his favorite play of the game was Tom Brady’s last second Hail Mary pass to Aaron Hernandez, a tight end. Freshman Luis Sy thought the Patriot in the end zone would catch the football, score a touchdown, and win Superbowl XLVI for the New England Patriots. “It was a really good game and a repeat of the Superbowl in 2008, where the Giants also won, breaking the Patriots perfect record,” Sy said. During the 2008 Superbowl the Giants also had a late comeback to win the Superbowl against the Patriots and Eli Manning was crowned Superbowl MVP. According to the NFL website, the New York Giant’s quarterback Eli Manning became the Superbowl MVP after completing 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards. The New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was 27 for 41 for 276 yards. Although the Superbowl crowns one NFL team as a champion, it is also known for its halftime show and commercials. Sophomore Shant Mardirosian said that this Sunday’s game was good because he wanted the Giants to win, but the halftime show was terrible. Madonna performed at the halftime show with special guest appearances by Nicki Minaj, Cee Lo Green, LMFAO and M.I.A. “It was obvious she was lip-syncing, but I liked the effects on the field,” said senior Mgo Arabian. Although Madonna’s performances are usually over the top, this one featured some controversy as well. M.I.A.’s appearance has been buzz worthy because during her performance she decided to give her middle finger to all the viewers, which is not allowed on television. Although many viewers didn’t see the malfunction on television because it blended in with her outfit, it was broadcast on news channels and all over the Internet. The Superbowl is also known for companies’ brand new commercials. Baloyan’s favorite commercial was for Acura, which featured Matthew Broderick. The commercial was a modern remake of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Sy’s favorite commercial featured Clint Eastwood for Chrysler and ran for two minutes. The commercial entitled, “It’s Halftime in America” is viewed by some as an advertisement against the Democratic government. This was the eighth Super Bowl victory for the New York Giants, and they will try to defend their title when the 2012-2013 season begins on Sept. 6.
