(May 24, 2011) — It started out first as an ordinary project for students in Melissa O’Gara’s Spanish class. When O’Gara announced that the project would be a partner project, friends and sophomores Peter Lee and Errol Lopez decided to team up. The top two podcasts would be submitted to the 2011 Digital Voice Awards, a Los Angeles County area wide contest featuring “technological” submissions from any subject. Outside of class, Lee and Lopez wrote their script for their legend, Una leyenda Pedro de Condia, based on a legend from the country of Bolivia. Using an Apple application called GarageBand, the two put together their podcast in school with Mac computers. “Errol drew the pictures and I did the speaking for the podcast,” said Lee. “We thought we would win because we put a lot of effort into it.” It took Lee and Lopez about five hours to finish the podcast. Lee said that winning the contest has opened up a new perspective toward learning Spanish. Their podcast along with other selected winner’s submissions were recognized at the “virtual” Digital Voice Awards on May 19.
