(May 24, 2011) — I ’ve always been attracted to romantic comedies that have similar plots, and Something Borrowed isn’t any different. The story is quite similar to most chick flicks: a girl and a guy fall in love, but there’s an obstacle standing between their love. In Something Borrowed , the obstacle is Darcy, played by Kate Hudson, a loud, party animal. Darcy is engaged to Dex (Colin Egglesfield) and is best friends with Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) who happens to have a crush on Dex. Rachel is the complete opposite of Darcy; she’s a lawyer, an intellectual, and a single, 30-year-old woman in New York City. On the night of Rachel’s 30th birthday, she drunkenly reveals her law school crush for Dex, which leads to a fling that progresses throughout the movie without Darcy’s knowledge. The only person who knows about Rachel’s and Dex’s relationship is Rachel’s longtime friend Ethan (John Krasinski). The secret couple must decide whether to tell Darcy and forever ruin their friendship or to just ignore their love and move on with life. After watching Something Borrowed , a movie that explored love and friendship, I thought to myself: In life, should we follow our hearts or just do what we think is right? Throughout the movie, this question is indirectly answered with the soap opera-like storyline. The movie is entertaining with Krasinski’s and Hudson’s hilarious remarks and good acting, but when it comes to Egglesfield, I expected more. Egglesfield perfectly fits the description of Dex with his good looks and charm, but his acting is lackluster. I expected his character to sweep the audience off their feet, like he did with Rachel. Instead, he seems boring. Overall, this movie is funny and unpredictable with its constant twists and turns, but by the end it seems to fit the usual romantic comedy theme. The movie has a somewhat happy and expected ending, but after the credits end there is one final scene that ends with “To be continued…” This ending keeps the audience wondering about a sequel.
