(Feb. 9, 2011) — Along with Assistant Principal Kristina Provost, 11 Clark students went to Glendale Community College on Jan. 12 to attend the 26th annual Youth Leadership Conference. The conference, which is hosted by The Character and Ethics Project, is designed to give students the opportunity to meet with adults in various professions to enhance their leadership skills, as well as learn the importance of ethics in society. The students who attended were from nine different high schools from the Glendale, La Cañada and Burbank school districts. “Of the 20 students that attended, we were broken down into smaller groups of four and were assigned a mentor,” junior Lily Chorbadjian said. “We were given the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and discussed each of the seven habits in our groups.” The book, written by Sean Covey, provides various ways teens and their parents can overcome daily obstacles. Chorbadjian and the other students went over how they can incorporate each of these habits, such as how to be proactive and how to synergize, into their daily lives. “Overall, it was a great experience for me. It allowed me to learn many things about myself and how to become an effective teen,” Chorbadjian said. ASB President Lyova Zalyan enjoyed exchanging his views with others on how one should act in different scenarios, such as when a fire alarm goes off. Along with other students, Zalyan filled out questionnaires and partook in various activities that represented what kind of personalty and work ethic they possessed. Zalyan also has had an active role in planning the Youth Leadership Conference for the past two years. He was assigned to be part of the Planning Committee by Provost because of his experience, and he was obligated to attend numerous meetings. These meetings were set up to schedule the conferences and to ensure the participation of different districts. Zalyan believes that these meetings are valuable for students to attend because they allow them to learn various life techniques and skills.“In the Youth Leadership Conference, I learn the importance of staying organized and the fact that being prepared will benefit me in everything I do,” Zalyan said.
