( Nov. 23, 2010 ) — Due Date is movie that stimulates a thousand different emotions of pleasure, pain and reassurance. It is a movie meant for the light-hearted viewer; it is a comedy full of crude jokes, somewhat unbelievable circumstances, and sudden changes in character’s feelings as well as your own. Due Date stars hunkalicious Robert Downey Jr. as Peter Highman, a successful architect who wishes to fly from Atlanta to Los Angeles in time to see the birth of his newborn baby. Upon his arrival at the airport, he meets an aspiring actor named Ethan Tremblay played by Zach Galfianakis. Ethan, who is an unsightly pothead, tries to unsuccessfully befriend Peter after his taxi crashes into Peter’s town car. Ironically, they end up sitting adjacently to each other on their flight on first class. Before takeoff, Ethan sees Peter using his phone and thoughtlessly tells him to turn it off because terrorists use it to activate bombs. This causes panic on the plane and both are placed on a no-fly list. Peter, without his wallet, faces his worst nightmare: he is forced to hitch a ride with Ethan and attempt to arrive to Los Angeles by his wife’s due date. Due Date revolves around the theme of friendship between two completely different characters. Peter is the character of success while Ethan is the character of inspiration. Although the two characters are opposites of each other, they find harmony through the adventures and fun times they have. The various situations make the movie fun to watch mainly because they revolve around the use of medical marijuana, views on success, and a suspected affair. Through the use of Ethan’s stupidity, the movie can be compared to Borat in that it portrays some Americans as uneducated and ignorant. The movie also includes notes of sympathy and reassurance which tie the theme together. Downey Jr. and Galfianakis’s superb acting compliment each other like coffee and cream. Some people may disagree because of Galfianakis’s flat character, but for a movie that revolves around two people, it deserves applause. It is extremely difficult to keep a movie interesting while focusing mainly on two characters. The writers and actors both do their part to prevent the movie from becoming dull. This can be credited to Peter’s successful, gradual change in character throughout the movie. Towards the end, these opposite characters attract not only each other but also a wide variety of audiences.
