(Oct. 29, 2010) — The anthem of summer 2010 “California Gurls” isn’t the only good song Katy Perry has to offer on her new album, Teenage Dream . Perry’s newest CD was released on Aug. 24 and includes the songs “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.” On this album, Perry shows her pop and rock talents that are seen throughout her romantic songs. Her new songs are intended to make the audience dance and have fun, but also keep a story-like essence. Her lyrics are fun, flirty, angry and romantic. The real Katy is in every note and lyric because she writes all her songs. Although many of her songs are about teenage struggles, the songs relate to people of all ages because they focus on the events and obstacles of life. Teenage Dream has both upbeat and slow songs that are catchy. Perry’s hit single featuring Snoop Dogg, “California Gurls” has a memorable chorus that starts with “California girls/We’re unforgettable/Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top/Sun-kissed skin so hot” and quickly remains in the head of most listeners. The title track, “Teenage Dream,” although overplayed, is a dream song for teenage girls. Songs that are not played on the radio, but still show Perry’s real talent include “Not Like the Movies,” “The One that Got Away,” “Who am I Living For,” “Circle the Drain,” “Firework” and “Pearl.” These songs seems to have a different approach compared to all of Perry’s other songs. These songs are calm and have a sweet melody to them. In the songs, Perry sings about love and her pain. She questions who she is and what others have done to her. The song “Circle the Drain” is about her ex-boyfriend, Gym Class Heroes’ front-man Travis McCoy, and how his abuse of drugs affected their relationship. In my opinion, the calmer, slower songs are the best ones on the album. “Hummingbird Heartbeat,” “Last Friday Night [T.G.I.F],” “E.T.” and “Peacock” are some of her more raunchy songs on Teenage Dream . These songs are provocative and have some shocking lyrics. Overall, Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream has catchy and great songs. This is just the beginning of Perry’s successful career.
