(Sept. 29, 2010) — One of the most popular ways to stay in shape is by going to the gym. Many Clark students frequent the 24 Hour Fitness in Glendale along with World Gym and the YMCA. Sophomore Artash Sughyan has been going to the gym for about six months. “I like it,” said Sughyan. “It relaxes me somehow.” By spending more than two hours at the gym five to six times a week, Sughyan said that he hopes to get “ripped.” Every other day, Sughyan exercises his biceps, shoulders, back and abs. In between, he works on his chest, triceps and does 30 minutes of cardio afterwards. Sughyan also plays basketball on the courts that are offered at the gym as well. Other features of 24 Hour Fitness are a swimming pool and a sauna. While Sughyan hopes to improve his biceps, back and chest, sophomore Soseh Balayan attends the Total Woman gym to exercise and stay in shape. “There’s so many different types of equipment and so I have a lot of choices,” she said. Babayan likes the gym because it’s clean and organized. “The people are also very nice so it’s a nice environment to work out in,” she said. Babayan chose Total Woman for many factors, one of them being is the fact that she feels more comfortable working out around women. “I don’t want guys sweating on the machines!” she said. Babayan said with the various exercise machines and an amazing spa, “Total Woman definitely has the advantage.” Like Babayan, junior Khalil Jammal also wants to stay in good shape. He goes to the YMCA every day to lead a healthier lifestyle. Its close proximity allows him to walk there. Unlike the majority of people who go to the gym, he has never used protein bars to improve his muscularity. “I’m all natural,” he said. Since beginning to go to the gym, Jammal has also improved academically. “Usually, when I go to the gym, I do my homework super fast,” said Jammal. “It makes me think clearer.” Jammal alternates between swimming, playing basketball and exercising his various muscle groups. He sometimes goes with his cousin but prefers to go alone. “I like to train myself,” he said. “I’ll be more disciplined that way.
