(May 27, 2010) — In some GUSD high schools, such as Glendale High School, a Big Brother/Big Sister Program comforts the incoming freshmen and helps them with their transition into high school. Clark’s Principal Advisory Council (PAC) was an organization that began in 2001, but due to certain circumstances, it lasted for only a year. Junior class Vice President Lyova Zalyan, Assistant Principal Kristina Provost, and ASB advisor Elaine Snodgress founded the new version of PAC, which Zalyan says is meant for juniors and seniors to gain a sense of responsibility by helping out the freshmen with their classes and school-related issues. The program will consist of 30 student leaders and five advisers, all led by Zalyan. Once every two months, the student leaders must meet with their assigned freshmen to discuss the current school activities and how they are managing their classes. During these meetings, advisers will assign members activities that will unify the students with their surroundings. “It’ll help freshmen understand the environment better and how things work at this school,” Zalyan said. “We’ll also provide them with tips on how to balance school work with personal life.” Zalyan is confident that many freshmen will enjoy the organization, and he is working hard to ensure it. He hopes that the organization will last for many years to come to help enhance student’s leadership skills and allow the members to feel like they are helping their school.
