(April 1, 1999) — It’s 3:15 p.m. and the Rescue 77 team has just gotten back from a near-death call when the bell goes off and they have to go out again to save yet another life. This is the main story line of the new show on the WB called “Rescue 77.” This show aired for the first time March 15, and it shows every Monday night at 9 p.m. Victor Brown, Christian Kane and Marjorie Monaghan star as Michael Bell, Wick Lobo and Kathryn Ryan, the three main paramedics on their team. Captain Durfree, played by Richard Roundtree, also appears in many of the episodes. He is the calm, patient, wise character whom everyone goes to for advice. Kathryn Ryan is the hardworking, emotionally strong and withdrawn paramedic who comes from a broken home with a drunken mother and no mention of a father. Wick Lobo is the loudmouth, hotheaded, troublemaker of the trio. Lastly, there is Michael Bell, the tough withdrawn paramedic whose mother died and whose father is a big shot stock market company owner. Michael is currently seeing a nurse from the nearby hospital who is changing his views on dating and the whole aspect of life and death. This show has a strong resemblance to the old hit ER in dealing with many life and death situations, dishing out medical terms at every crisis and giving viewers an inside peek at the life of paramedics and their bravery. However, for some strange reason, the WB is not promoting the show as extensively as it has for others. Except for the commercials on the WB and a few small sentences for the show on the web, the show is not advertised anywhere, and not many people have heard of it. “I never heard of the show until you told me about it, and even if I had, I wouldn’t have watched it,” Laila Gordy, a freshman here at Clark, explained. “I’m not a person who likes those types of shows.” An extensive search on the WB’s web site revealed no mention of Rescue 77 at all. Perhaps this is the reason not many people have bothered to watch the show. Or maybe the show doesn’t appeal to the WB audience, despite its fast moving action and heart-stopping situations that keep you on the edge of your seat. Jessica Jaramillo was very straightforward when she explained why she didn’t watch the show. She told us, “The show doesn’t look too interesting, but I’d watch it to see the cute guys.”
