(April 1, 1999) — ” Forces of Nature,” starring Ben Affleck (Ben) and Sandra Bullock (Sarah) is a comedy which demonstrates the different aspects of life and marriage. Also starring are Maura Tierney (Bridget), Steve Zahn (Alan) and Blythe Danner and Ron Cox (Bridget’s parents). This romantic comedy is directed by Bronwen Hughes and is intelligently written by Marc Lawrence. Ben is a young New Yorker who writes jacket copy for novels. He is portrayed as a pragmatic, faithful, button-down kind of guy, unlike his best friend and best man Alan, who likes to be on the more impractical side. Ben leaves for Savannah, the location of his wedding, a few days after Bridget. Once at the airport, he catches a glimpse of the tattooed Sarah, who at the time seems to be in a world of her own with her soon to be ex-husband. Sarah is characterized as the type who makes a public exhibit out of everything. She is a former stewardess, exotic dancer, auto show hostess and wedding videographer. Sarah is the last person Ben wants to meet and ironically she is the one who ends up sitting next to him on the flight. Both Sarah and Ben excel at getting on one another’s nerves. As a result, before they leave they airport, Sarah peeks at Ben while he is writing his wedding vows. Then she asks whether he works for Hallmark. The flight never really quite leaves the airport, and in order to reach Savannah, these two have to become traveling companions, whether they like it or not. These two embark on a car, train and bus trip through the South that might as well been routed through the Bermuda Triangle. “Forces of Nature” is playful and written with unexpected lines. It left the viewer anxiously waiting for the fate of Ben and Sarah (and the other characters) to be decided. “Forces of Nature” may leave the audience feeling cheated, but the viewer can tell that some extremely skilled professionals worked on this movie.
