(February 10, 2000) — Clark Magnet High School was ranked the top high school on the Stanford 9 scores in the Glendale Unified School District, according to the Academic Performance Index (API) for the year 1999. Each April, students take the Stanford 9 standardized test, which includes basic skills that students have gained over the past years. Last year, Clark’s freshmen and sophomores completed the SAT 9 in mathematics, reading, language, history-social science and science. “I think it’s helpful because a test that doesn’t affect our grades could end up giving us a scholarship,” commented sophomore Katherine Djaghouri. Although Clark was the top high school in Glendale with 771 points, the school must raise its score this year to 772. The API scoring was based on scores between 200 and 1000. The statewide scoring average is 630. The rankings are also done to show improvements throughout all the schools and to compare the schools with each other. After score of one through ten was given to each school and from the 7,000 schools statewide, the scores were compared. Any school demonstrating a score of 800 or higher (and maintains it) receives rewards such as grants and scholarships to the students. Assistant principal Joan Shoff said, “I was really expecting our students to do well. These are the types of students we have at Clark, ones who take advantage of what we have to offer.”
