(February 28, 2001) — Tucked away in a plaza of neighboring Korean businesses lies the first restaurant to serve authentic Korean food in the La Crescenta area. As soon as the doors of the Hippo Snack Corner are pushed open, encouraging smiles are displayed. Surrounded by walls decorated with yellow paint and bright Korean paintings, a waitress hurriedly comes and provides a menu. These days it is a quite difficult to find a restaurant that has delicious, authentic, inexpensive Korean food. One of the restaurants that has great service and tasty food is the Hippo Snack Corner. Hippo Snack Corner is a family-style restaurant that features many delicious and traditional Korean dishes such as rice omelets, and beef cutlets. Almost every dish is priced less than $10. Gazing at the menu requires a lot of careful consideration because of the variety of selections. The pork cutlet and steamed dumplings were the choices that seemed the most appealing. The pork cutlet was sprinkled ever so lightly with teriyaki sauce. It also came with fresh salad and steamed rice. Decorated with Thousand Island dressing, the salad was a refreshing treat. Japanese miso soup comes complimentary along with each order. For the price of $6.45, the pork cutlet was a bit too crunchy, but overall it was a tantalizing choice. A great way to finish the meal is to indulge in the steamed dumplings, organized on a special tin canister that keeps the dumplings especially hot. Molded into a fan-like shape, dumplings are rich cakes with vegetable and meat fillings inside. Although the food was delicious, the restaurant was a bit crowded and stuffed. However, if dinners are ready to eat with a limited amount of elbow room then this is the restaurant to be at. Overall, it’s a respectable restaurant that serves fresh food and has fast reliable service.
