(March 30, 2001) — With PlayStation 2 already out and Gamecube and Xbox on the horizon, PSOne is bound to disappear into obscurity like so many other systems in the past. But before that happens, the console has screamed out with one last hoorah. And the name of that final breath is “Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix.” A game that perfectly blends adventure and survival-horror, “Retro Helix” truly is one of the last great titles for the PSOne. An intriguing story, challenging puzzles and heart-pounding battles make this a game not to be missed by any action fan. “Retro Helix” is a prequel to last year’s smash hit. It explains how the first game’s characters met. And as in “Fear Effect,” you will play as Hana, Glas, Deke and a new character, Hana’s then partner Rain. Sharing all of its pre-decessor’s positive aspects and almost none of its low points, “Retro Helix” is a game you won’t be able to stop playing. And those annoying “all of a sudden you’re dead” moments are very rare now. But for the few that are still there, an option to quickly reload your last-saved game is available. As in the first game, stealth is a major factor in how long you will survive. Being detected means almost certain doom in some areas. It is now also possible to hide in the shadows and quietly pick off a group of enemies while remaining unseen. “Retro Helix” has a slew of new weapons, including flamethrowers and rocket launchers, which come in very handy during the game’s intense boss battles. However, this means that several enemies will also have these new weapons. The graphics in “Retro Helix” look just as good as the first game’s. The looping video backgrounds and slick anime style have been marvelously reproduced. The expansive environments are very easy to immerse yourself in. With PSOne on its way out, “Retro Helix” is an excellent game to end its illustrious career. And as one of the first real contenders for 2001 game of the year, “Fear Effect 2” is a must-own. “Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix” is available for PSOne. Rated M for animated violence, strong language and mature sexual themes.
