(January 26, 2010) — When a theory becomes fact, limitations are quickly imposed. Copernicus, the earth is flat. I don’t believe in evolution—yes, heresy. But, living in the 21 st century and having read books apart from On the Origin of Species , I repeat my dissent: I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that we could go from fish to human. I’m sorry, but I have difficulties adopting a biological dogma created by one who didn’t quite comprehend the intricacy of a single cell. “But, it’s a theory!” Yes, I know, and Aristotle’s flat world is still debated today (theflatearthsociety.org). We seem to be devolving. Either that, or we’re afraid. We live by illogicality because we have to live by something. If we weren’t once bacteria, who are we? No, if the theory prevents this trauma, then it must exist—fine. But, I fear the limitations. It starts with the term “evolution deniers.” And then we’re back to Copernicus and the Church. “We learned that lesson.” Lessons are forgotten. The Soviet Union suppressed genetics—it interfered with the theory ; it proposed a dangerous change. I don’t want to choose between The Descent of Man and The Voyage of the Beagle . I want to choose. I want science to evolve and to prove that we remain the same.
