(February 20, 2002) — Students and parents trickled into the cybrary Feb. 5 as Director of Financial Aid at Caltech, David Levy, began the financial aid workshop at Clark. He covered the basics of financial aid documents, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form and specifically the steps of the on-line application process. Levy stressed the convenience of the on-line application, FAFSA on the Web ( www.fafsa.ed.gov ). According to Levy, “The paper version takes 4-6 weeks, while the electronic (on-line) version is processed in 72 hours.” He also suggested that when submitting the form electronically students should make sure to avoid cyberspace traffic on weekdays. Levy went through the FAFSA question-by-question, and stated that “the most often missed question is ‘What is your Social Security Number?’” Often times, parents list their social security number rather than the student’s. A common misconception among students is that their parents’ income is too high. Levy repeatedly said to file for financial aid anyway. He added that last year, the state of California had 35 million dollars of unclaimed Cal Grant money. Levy told his audience that in order to guarantee that a student’s FAFSA is processed on time, applicants should submit forms electronically or by mailing the forms with a Certificate of Mailing at the post office. When Levy asked whether anyone was still thinking of submitting their FAFSA through the mail, no one raised their hand. Smiling, Levy quipped, “Mr. Dall will be happy to know that.”
