(March 20, 2002) — Three Clark students are among 100 competitors from the Los Angeles County Regional Occupational Program (LACOROP) Recognitional Program who await the final results after interviews held last week. Winners receive gold and silver medals as well as a monetary stipend. Senior Sharon Kim challenged 14 people in the health field while, senior Joyce Taihei competed in the creative arts category and junior Tatevik Mamikonyan competed in marketing. Kim said, “I had fun because I strapped one of the judges onto a backboard that emergency technicians use to transfer an injured person to the hospital as a demonstration.” Mamikonyan prepared a portfolio of fashion material and touched on the business aspects of marketing for her presentation, while Taihei gave a PowerPoint slideshow on the various photographs she had taken in her ROP class. LACOROP counselor Mark Brown informed students of the judging procedures to prepare them for the county competition. Each student presented before a panel of two to five judges who graded based on the application, interview and presentation. Each ROP teacher had the opportunity to nominate one student from each class who demonstrated good character, a positive attitude, initiative, good community involvement and attendance. According to Brown, being entered in this competition is a great learning opportunity because the interviews mirror those held for jobs.
