(March 20, 2002) — On Monday, Clark placed fourth in the 2002 Scholastic Bowl with 61 points. In the essay category, Clark placed third with 28 points. Members included senior Chester Ramos, juniors Jeff Shaw, Rashad Varma and Mitchell Rosen and alternate junior Jae Yi. There were two rounds of the quiz competition. In the first round, students wrote the answers down in a period of 10 seconds for regular questions and 30 seconds for math questions. By the 10-minute intermission, Crescenta Valley led by 67 points, while Hoover trailed with 54 points, with Clark and Glendale High nipping behind at 53 and 49 points respectively. With at least 200 people present, many schools showed their support. “Hoover, C.V, Glendale had a large audience present and they were very loud. Clark didn’t have a great audience and they were not so loud,” said Rosen. A tiebreaker was needed at the end of the final round for second place, with Glendale High moving past Hoover High. Final scores were Crescenta Valley 94, Clark 61, Glendale High 68 and Hoover 67 points respectively. The essay portion of the exam was held last Monday at the Glendale Board of Education from 4-5 p.m. This year’s topic was “Are the immigration policies in the United States correct?” This year, the team prepared by reviewing trivia questions and practicing different forms used in the competition every tutorial and every day at lunch, except Tuesdays, since late January. “[The Scholastic Bowl was] definitely worthwhile. It glorifie[d] intelligence rather than athleticism,” commented junior Rebecca Stuart.
