(April 26, 2002) — A much anticipated talent show and free dress day ended the annual Spirit Week April 5, organized by the Associated Student Body. The talent show was comprised of 12 acts, ranging from a serenade on the piano to rock and roll and dance group performances. Sophomore Tigran Ghazaryan’s piano playing dedication tugged on the heartstrings of many females in the audience. Curious spectators turned around and even stood up to see who the girl was. Sophomore Matthew Telesky said that the highlight of the week was the talent show, partly because it shortened the minimum day. Students crowded the bottom of the amphitheater April 1 to watch the arm wrestling contest on the first day of Spirit Week. There were more contestants than the allotted time allowed so the competition continued into snack on Tuesday. Seniors Danny Melkonyan and Martin Manucharyan ended the contest with Melkonian’s win. Decades Day April 2 had hippies from the ‘70s, big-haired women from the ‘80s and students wearing jeans, such as junior Christine Ji, who claimed that her decade was the ‘90s. The activities for this day included knockout basketball and the water balloon toss. After several rounds in the water balloon toss, three teams remained, but all three balloons hit the ground on the toss back. More balloons were brought out and sophomores William Brouwer and Matthew Jung won the game. During lunch on the third day, 20 people participated in the obstacle course. In one section of the obstacles, five blindfolded people attempted to eat dangling donuts while kneeling. Because of the Hawaiian theme this day, the junior class sold leis during snack and lunch. The originally planned sports awards ceremony during snack April 4 was moved to lunch. The dunk tank was cancelled due to administrative disapproval, according to ASB Director of Publicity Sara Sousani. A pie-eating contest was held for seniors. In place of the cancelled event, March Madness coordinators Judith Thomsen and Randal Tiffany handed out athletic awards, including one for best citizenship. Freshman Jannell Faraj said that the week was “pretty fun,” and the best was “watching everyone dress up and make a fool themselves” during the activities.
