(April 26, 2002) — After a highly competitive hour and a half of academic competition, Clark came in third place against Crescenta Valley, Hoover and Glendale High Schools in the junior varsity Scholastic Bowl competition held in the auditeria April 17 from 7-8:30 p.m. The final scores were C.V. 29, Hoover 27, Clark 20 and Glendale 16. The team included sophomore Punar Sikka and juniors Rebecca Stuart, Chris Kang, Alan Wilcox, Rory Alegria and Drew Atwater. Teams received two points for every correct answer and were deducted one point for every wrong answer. Clark was in second place until the end of the first round when a string of wrong answers dropped the team to third place. In the first round, Clark had 14 points while Hoover, Glendale and C.V. had 17, 13 and 25, respectively. The end of the competition left Hoover with 25 points, C.V. with 26, Glendale with 16 and Clark with 20. However, like in the varsity Scholastic Bowl, Hoover contested a question, stating quizmaster and math teacher Fred Blattner had read the answer for a question incorrectly. Hoover and Glendale’s scores rose one point and Clark’s score lost two after correcting the mistake, resulting in a tie between Hoover and C.V. To win the tiebreaker, the two teams needed to answer the best of five questions correctly. Two questions went unanswered and two went to C.V., giving it the win. The JV Scholastic Bowl is not as heavily publicized, nor as heavily attended as the varsity Scholastic Bowl, according to Wilcox. He added that the JV competition only has the quiz part. However, Kang commented that “all teams worked really hard and did a good job out there.”
